About the album

At the outset of the eighteenth century, Naples had gained ground as one of the most important musical centers in Italy. In 1729 Charles de Brosses wrote with great admiration in his „Lettres familières“: „Naples es la capitale du monde musicien.“

The Galant Style must be considered to be ground-breaking, and as preparatory for the Classical Style. For example, an unbroken teacher-student lineage can be documented which reaches from Gaetano Greco (1657-1728) to Nicola Antonio Porpora (1686-1768), further to Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), and then on to Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1826) and Carl Czerny (1791-1857).

Teatro del Mondo

The musicians of Teatro del mondo became acquainted with and appreciative of one another for the most part in an international Orfeo-project under the direction of Gabriel Garrido, one of the leading Monteverdi specialists of our time. After the founding of the ensemble numerous concerts followed, at home and abroad, which were enthusiastically reviewed by music critics. Whether it be as a vocal ensemble, with a large basso continuo group, or as an orchestra: the acclaim of Teatro del mondo has spread quickly. Among the highlights were performances and live broadcasts at the Rheingau Musik Festival, at the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the festival RheinVokal, the Beethovenfest Bonn, and the Young Euro Classic festival in Berlin. The widely acclaimed CD of madrigals „Durch die Nacht zu den Sternen“ was released on Spektral in 2015. In 2017 the CD „Orpheus“ with Julian Pregardien / tenor will be released on CPO, and the CD „Napoli“ with Robin Johannsen / soprano on Perfect Noise.

Composer(s)

Alessandro Scarlatti

Pietro Alessandro Gaspare Scarlatti was an Italian composer from the Baroque period. He mainly acquired fame through his oratorios, cantatas and (Neapolitan) operas. He was the father of Domenico, who followed his father's example and became a composer himself. In total, Scarlatti composed 38 oratorios, along with many masses and operas. His music has a spontaneous and unpredictable character, and at times a bit incoherent. Scarlatti had a great influence on the music of Georg Frideric Handel. Around 1708, the two composers met almost daily.

Giovanni Battista Pergolesi

Pergolesi already died at the age of 26. His premature death marked the start of a cult status that was quite remarkable for the 18th century. Especially Pergolesi's comic work La Serva Padrona became extremely popular. In Paris, this comedy put a lot of pressure on the old-fashioned, subsidised opera culture of Lully and Rameau.  His Stabat Mater for soprano and alto was not any less succesful, and it became the most re-published work of the 18th century. Everyone would have heard of the opening of this work at least once, with its equally poignant and refined interplay between consonants and dissonants. None other than Bach himself made an arrangement of this Stabat Mater, which he then named Tilge, Höchester, meine Sünden (BWV.1083).
